Deftones Bassist Chi Cheng Continues Slow Recovery, Donation Site Established

Posted under mtv

Last November, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car crash that left him in a coma. Cheng remains in a semi-conscious state but is making progress. His recovery has been both intensive and expensive, which is why his family has established One Love For Chi, a fundraising site that hopes to raise $100,000 towards Cheng’s healing. So far, they’re more than half way to their goal and are accepting donations, selling “One Love for Chi” T-shirts and auctioning off autographed merchandise. So far, they’ve managed to purchase Cheng an oxygen chamber and are currently working on building up funds to get him into a rehab facility in California or Texas.

The 39-year-old Cheng driving through Santa Clara, California, when he got into the accident. He was listed in critical condition for much of the first 72 hours and he has made steady progress since, though his body continues to fight off infection.

In the meantime, his band recruited Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega to fill in for him while they tour Europe in preparation for the release of their sixth album. In a recent update on the Deftones’ Web site, the group announced that they were working on getting together a benefit show for Chi in the fall, and members of Korn have also confirmed that they are working on a benefit album with members of Slipknot and Sevendust. In addition to being the Deftones’ bass player, Cheng was also a spoken-word poet (he released an album called The Bamboo Parachute in 2000) and did extensive outreach work for the homeless.
